Gender, form, and etymology

Etymology:

Greek: κοχλίας (shell, twist) + ψαλτρία (female harper); name is formed by the juxtaposition of cochleo-, from cochlear (Latin), meaning spoon and referring to the shape of the opercula, and -psaltria (Latin) which designates a cithara player (refers to the song of the cicada) and is a common ending for several generic names within the family Cicadidae
